Empowering LSP Farmers

On a recent session at the SJS Organic Farm, Mr. Paul Chilewa from TOAM (Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement) led a dynamic

training for the Local Service Provider (LSP) group, who are participating in a 15-day intensive program. Mr. Chilewa brought an engaging approach to the training, incorporating games and interactive teaching methods to ensure the participants stayed active and involved.

The focus of his session was the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS), a community-centered approach to organic certification. PGS is especially beneficial for small-scale farmers in developing countries, as it relies on shared values like participation, transparency, trust, and fairness. This system empowers farmers by allowing them to take charge of their organic practices and quality assurance processes, creating a sense of ownership and pride in their work.

Unlike traditional third-party certification, PGS offers a cost-effective and adaptable alternative. It ensures adherence to organic standards while promoting knowledge exchange, skill-building, and stronger community ties. Through PGS, farmers not only meet organic requirements but also build a network of support, contributing to the overall growth of the organic sector.

However, the success of PGS depends heavily on the active involvement of all stakeholders. Clear regulations and thorough documentation are essential to maintaining the integrity of the system. When executed well, PGS can significantly improve smallholder farmers' access to organic markets, helping to elevate their livelihoods and strengthen sustainable farming practices.
