Husain’s Journey with SJS Organic Farm and Helvetas Tanzania

Husain’s Journey as an LSP (Local Service Provider) with SJS Organic Farm and Helvetas Tanzania

Sustainable agriculture has the power to transform lives, and Husain’s story is a testament to this impact. Husain, a dedicated Ecological Orgnaic Agriculture (EOA) farmer from Singida, undertook an intensive organic farming course at SJS Organic Farm, supported by Helvetas Tanzania’s Ukijani Project. His journey, from a conventional farmer to a specialist in organic farming, highlights the importance of knowledge-sharing to bridge the gap in sustainable agricultural practices.

Training at SJS Organic Farm in EOA & LSP – Agriclinic Consultant & GBC (Green Business Center) Zero waste Micro Induatry (MI):

Husain enrolled in a specialized organic agriculture training program at SJS Organic Farm, where he acquired skills in:

  • The production of organic fertilizers, including compost, liquid fertilizers, and organic DAP alternatives.
  • The formulation of natural pesticides to protect crops without harming the environment.
  • Organic livestock feed preparation to enhance animal nutrition sustainably.
  • Soil conservation and water management techniques tailored for semi-arid regions like Singida.

Through hands-on learning, Husain gained practical experience that would later revolutionize his farm back home.

Implementing Organic Farming in Singida as an effective LSP

Upon returning home, Husain immediately applied his newfound knowledge. He transitioned from conventional farm to organic farming, ensuring that his crops thrived without synthetic inputs. His farm soon became a model of sustainable agriculture in his community, focusing on:

  • Organic Fertilizer Production a Micro Industry: Establishing a system for producing high-quality compost and liquid fertilizers, significantly improving soil health and crop yields.
  • Diversified Farming: Integrating fruit trees, vegetables, and staple crops, creating a balanced ecosystem that enhances food system and security.
  • Community Knowledge Sharing through Agriclinic consultancy service: Becoming a resource person for local farmers who recognize him as a leader in organic agriculture.

Visit from SJS Organic Farm Director

Recognizing Husain’s progress, the Director of SJS Organic Farm visited his farm in Singida to assess the real-world impact of the training and provide additional mentorship. During the visit, the director observed:

  • Well-organized organic farming systems with clearly defined crop rotation and soil improvement techniques.
  • Effective use of organic inputs to enhance plant growth and pest resistance.
  • Strong community engagement, with Husain actively training fellow farmers on organic practices.

The director praised Husain’s efforts, noting that his success exemplifies the mission of SJS Organic Farm and the Helvetas Ukijani Project—to empower farmers with sustainable agricultural skills that drive long-term change.

Looking Ahead

Husain now aims to expand his organic farming activities as an LSP (Agriclinic & GBC):

  • Increasing production to meet the growing demand for organic produce.
  • Establishing a local organic training center to empower more farmers.
  • Collaborating with SJS Organic Farm and Helvetas Tanzania for continuous learning and innovation.

Husain’s journey stands as proof that with the right knowledge and support, sustainable agriculture can drive economic and environmental transformation.
